Company Name: LSI Logic

Description: LSI Logic Corporation was founded as a semiconductor ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) company in Milpitas, California in 1981 by Wilfred Corrigan with Bill O'Meara, Rob Walker, and Mitchell Bohn.

LSI is currently headed by Abhi Talwalkar as President and Chief Executive Officer. Wilfred J. Corrigan serves as Chairman, while Gregorio Reyes, Malcolm R. Currie, James H. Keyes, and Matthew J. O'Rourke head as Directors of various divisions.

The company is headquartered in Milpitas, California and has international operations in the Americas, Europe, and the Asia Pacific. LSI Logic extended its global reach by establishing independent affiliate companies in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. It founded Nihon LSI Logic in Tokyo, Japan in 1984, and LSI Logic Ltd. in Bracknell, United Kingdom in June of that same year.

Its other subsidiaries are LSI Logic Canada, found in Calgary, Alberta; LSI Logic (S) Pte Ltd in Singapore; LSI Logic France; Engenio Information Technologies, Inc. established in Milpitas, California; and DM Store found in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

LSI Logic expanded its business and product line through in-house development, acquisitions, and strategic alliances. Its first alliance came in 1985 when it entered a joint venture with Kawasaki Steel, with the aim to build a wafer fabrication plant in Tsukuba, Japan. It had also acquired Symbios Logic from Hyundai in August 1998, and C-Cube in March of 2001. In September 2001, LSI purchased the RAID adapter division of AMI, and then acquired Mylex from IBM in September 2002. SiliconStor was added to LSI’s list of acquisitions when it had purchased the said company for approximately $55 million in February 2007.

On April 2, 2007, the company completed its merger with Agere Systems Inc. The merger had rebranded the company from LSI Logic Corporation to LSI Corporation. It currently uses the ticker symbol LSI on the New York Stock Exchange.

LSI also had several transactions wherein it had traded its assets to other companies. On June 27, 2007, Magnum Semiconductor, Inc. purchased LSI’s consumer products business. On October 24 of the same year, Infineon Technologies completed its purchase of LSI’s Mobility Division.

Last April 2008, LSI had completely acquired the assets of the hard disk drive semiconductor business of Infineon Technologies. That same month, LSI founded the MSBG Alliance. Its member companies include the Aricent Inc., Nortel Corporation, Telrad Networks Ltd., Infineon Technologies AG, Accton Technology Corporation, Nakina Systems Inc., VIA Technologies, Inc., Dimark Technologies, Inc., and Mediatrix Telecom.

The company is one of the industry’s trendsetters in silicon-to-systems solutions. It is primarily involved in the design, manufacture, and market of semiconductors and storage systems. These two aforementioned products comprise the company’s base of operations.

LSI’s semiconductor segment produces integrated circuits (IC’s). It includes both application specific IC’s (ASIC’s) and standard products. It also produces redundant array independent disks (RAID), host-bus adapters, and other related products and services.

On the other hand, LSI’s storage systems segment provides enterprise storage systems through its subsidiary, Engenio Information Technologies. The said company designs and manufactures modular enterprise storage platforms and storage management software. These products are distributed to the consumer market through IBM, SGI, StorageTek, and Teradata.

LSI also caters to the communications and consumer markets. It provides various products for broadband, networking, enterprise networks and printing systems for the communications market. The company provides digital media processing products for broadband, game consoles, DVDs, DVRs, EVDs, digital and HDTV’s, set-top boxes HD tuners, video peripherals, and professional video production or broadcasting devices for the consumer market as well.

The company’s products are marketed by its brand names LSI logic and C-Cube.

LSI is in competition with several other companies within its industry. These include Adaptec, Inc., Broadcom Corporation, EMC Corporation, Hitachi, Ltd., International Business Machines Corporation, Koninklijke Philips Electronics NV, NEC Corporation, and Network Appliance, Inc., STMicroelectronics NV, Texas Instruments, Inc., Toshiba Corporation, Cirrus Logic, Inc., Dot Hill Systems Corporation, and Marvell Technology Group Ltd.
