About Mouse Drivers
When your mouse isn't working properly, consider updating your mouse drivers. The wrong drivers can make your mouse act erratically or not work at all. Checking for mouse driver updates is easy and the process takes less than five minutes.
When your mouse isn't working properly, always check to see if there is something simple to fix first. If you have a roller ball mouse, remove the roller ball cover and clean the ball. Then simply replace the ball and its cover. Dirt on the roller ball can cause the cursor on the computer screen to jump or not move at all. For those that have a wireless mouse, check to see if the batteries need to be replaced. Old batteries will cause erratic behaviour with a wireless mouse. Finally, make sure you have a clean mouse pad. When the mouse pads become dirty, the mouse won't track properly. Mouse pads can be washed with a load of towels and then tossed into the dryer.
When all else fails, check the mouse drivers. This can be done by going to your system's control panel and clicking on the mouse icon. This will bring up the computer's mouse properties. Click on the hardware tab. This will tell you what kind of mouse that you have attached to your system. Click on "properties" then click on the "driver" tab. There are several options on this tab. Select "update driver," then select "Install the driver automatically." The computer will search for the best driver for your system and install it for you.
After the installation has completed check to see if the mouse is working properly. If it still isn't working properly, reboot the system. The mouse should work properly after the reboot. However, if it doesn't, there is one more option- visit the manufacturer's website and download the most current mouse driver.
The manufacturer's website can be found by searching for it in your browser's search box. Once you've found the manufacturer's website, look for their support and downloads page. Locate the exact model of the mouse you own and then search for the driver download that corresponds with your operating system (i.e., Windows Vista). Some manufacturers make this easy by letting you search for the driver download by the serial number on the bottom of the mouse. Once you've found the correct driver file, download and install it on your computer. Follow all of the instructions exactly, including unplugging the mouse from the computer and rebooting, if necessary. After the installation of the new mouse drivers, the mouse should be working as good as new.
