Nakamichi Drivers
Company: Nakamichi
Description: Nakamichi Corporation, Ltd. is one of the world’s leaders in the design and production of home audio and video equipment. The company is most famous for its historic and high-quality cassette desks.
The Nakamichi International Office is headquartered in the Grande Building, Singapore. The Nakamichi Japan Sales Office is based in Shibuya-ku, Tokyo and the Hong Kong Sound View International, Ltd., a subsidiary sales office, in Kowloon, Hong Kong.
Japanese Etsuro Nakamichi founded the company in 1948 as Nakamichi Research Corporation, Ltd. It started as an electronics research and development company. Eventually, Nakamichi dabbled into the manufacture of portable radios, speakers, tone arms, and other communications equipment. Since then, Nakamichi went on to produce other audio innovations. These include high-end DAT recorders, self-centering record players, and ultra-compact CD changers.
In 1951, Nakamichi formally released in Japan the world’s first open-reel tape recorder using the Magic Tone brand name. Six years after, the company produced the first proprietary magnetic tape head that could reproduce up to 20 Hz to 20 kHz of audio. During that year, Nakamichi also developed its own 3-head open-reel tape deck under the Fidela brand. Because of its innovations, the company started to manufacture tape heads and electronic equipment for major manufacturers. Its first clients included KLH, Harman Kardon, Advent, Fisher, Concord, ELAC, Sylvania, Motorola, and Ampex.
In the 1990s, consumer electronics manufacturer Grande Holdings acquired Nakamichi as a subsidiary company. Nakamichi, however, retained independence in its operations.
In 1990, Nakamichi began to shift its product focus from analog to digital, producing the DAT 1000 Digital Recorder and the DA/AD processor. Four years after, in 1994, the company sold more than 2 million units of its MusicBank CD Changer. This led to the production of a 3-disc MusicBank in 1995 and a 5-disc MusicBank for mobile users in 1996.
The first of the SoundSpace series of stereo music systems was released in 1998. These music systems were built with the technology used in producing the 5-disc MusicBank. The SoundSpace systems are powered by a subwoofer/satellite system. In 2000, Nakamichi expanded its SoundSpace series to include other models such as high-end home theater systems. The products in the company’s SoundSpace have received numerous awards from the Consumer Electronics Association. They were also given the Industrial Design Society of America Innovation award and Editor’s Choice recognitions from E-Gear, Audio Video Interiors, and Sound & Vision publications.
