Description: The National Cash Register Company is a provider of self-servicing technology and enterprise data warehousing solutions. These include point-of-sale workstations, automated teller machines, and self-check-in-and-out systems. NCR operates with 28,900 employees in the United States and the EMEA region.

John Patterson assumed control of the Ohio Dayton, a cash register factory, in 1882. From there he founded NCR, one of the first companies to come up with mechanical cash registers. In 1913, when NCR started to flourish, the Justice Department of Ohio sentenced Patterson to jail for product tampering, bribery, and spying on his company’s competitors.

In 1952, NCR acquired the Computer Research Corporation. After a year, the company established the Computer Research Corporation Electronics Division to further pursue electronics applications for business machines. NCR also started making PCB coated carbonless paper.

NCR bought control of the Appleton Coated Paper Company in 1970. The company decided to merge Appleton with Mills, another NCR subsidiary, to form the Appleton Paper Inc. in Appleton, Wisconsin.

In 1982, the company launched the Tower super-microcomputer system. That same year, AT&T acquired NCR, making it a complete AT&T subsidiary. In 1994, NCR changed its name to AT&T Global Information Solution.

At the turn of the millennium, NCR oversaw the purchase of a number of companies, namely: Memorex Telex Asia-Pacific, 4Front Technologies, UNICCS, 50 percent of Stirling Douglas, 20 percent of iATMglobal, 15 percent of Research Computer Services, 10 percent of Ceres Integrated Solutions, and 10 percent of Sage Tree, Inc.

Today, NCR remains to be the leading company when it comes to servicing technology and enterprise data warehousing. It continues to offer products and services including a broad range of information technical services, point-of-sale terminals, self-checkout units, entry-level servers; personal computers, scanners, web kiosks, electronic shelf labels, and self-service Automated Teller Machines with the essential software tools.

NCR also sells thermal transfer ribbons, thermal paper rolls, carbonless multi-ply paper rolls, conventional single-ply paper rolls, labels, business forms, inking products, inkjet cartridges, laser cartridges, and retail office products. NCR is one of the world’s largest paper roll converters. It has several paper roll manufacturing factories located around the world.
