Description: Netopia is a computer, network and telecommunications company. Netopia was established originally as Farallon Computing. It changed its name to Netopia in 1998. Its headquarters is located in Emeryville, California.

Motorola acquired Netopia in 2007. Motorola is a telecommunications company that produces and markets Netopia products.

The President and CEO of Motorola and CEO of Broadband Mobility Solutions is Gregory Q. Brown. After Motorola’s takeover, corporate headquarters was moved to Schaumburg, Illinois.

Netopia develops and produces a wide range of broadband and telecommunications hardware and products such as modems, gateways, routers and wireless devices.

Netopia also produces Netopia Broadband Server Software (NBBS) as well as remote administrative software like Timbuktu. This remote control software allows users to control other computers across the Internet or a Local Area Network. Farallon originally developed Timbuktu in the late 1980’s as a product for the Apple Macintosh system. A version for use on Microsoft Windows was later developed. Timbuktu is the only commercial non-VNC (Virtual Network Computing) based remote control software that currently has both client and server operating on both platforms.

While the primary purpose of Timbuktu is remote control, the application is known to have support for various remote computer control features such as screen scaling, multiple displays, remote screen and keyboard lockouts, color depth reduction for improved speed and clipboard synchronization.

As Timbuktu was Netopia’s flagship product, when Motorola acquired Netopia, Timbuktu continued to be developed and marketed but under the Motorola brand name.

To ensure that the company offers only the most recent technology in the industry, NDC sees to it that it is updated with the latest. Some of the most recent seminars and exhibits Netopia has attended are the NTCS 2007 Annual Meeting and Expo, CeBIT and NYSTA.

Netopia, as one of the most recognized names in the computer industry backed up with Motorola and affiliated with many big names in the computing industry has been a very powerful name in this side of the industry. Netopia is currently a partner of the other computer and networking firms such as The Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA), DSL Forum, Home Gateway Initiative (HGI), Home Phoneline Networking Alliance (Home PNA), Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MOCA) and Wi-Fi Alliance.
