Description: Nokia initially started as a wood-pulp mill in 1865. The company was then called Finnish Rubber Works. They branded their products “Nokia,” after the Nokianvirta River.

The current President and CEO of Nokia is Olli-Pekka Kallasuvo . Jorma Ollila remains Chairman. The company currently employs 112, 262 employees located in 120 countries. Its products are available in 150 countries. It has an annual revenue of 51.1 billion Euros. It is the largest Finland-based company.

Nokia Wood Mills merged with Finnish Cable Works in 1979 to create the Nokia Corporation. It began manufacturing telecommunication devices. It also merged with Salora Oyo of the same year. This merged company designed phones for Nordice Mobile Telephony. This company was later called Nokia Mobile Phones in 1989. The first GSM phones were launched in 1991.

Nokia also developed networking equipment for the telecommunications industry in the 1970s. It created the first digital switch for telephone exchanges called the Nokia DX2000.

Nokia bought SEGA in September 22, 2003. It was then able to develop a gaming phone, the Nokia N-Gage.

Nokia and Siemens AG merged in June 19, 2006. The joint was called Nokia Siemens Networks. It merged the mobile and fixed-line phone network equipment of the two companies.

Nokia continues to expand and develop. In 2006, Nokia acquired Loudeye Corp, an online music distributor. With the acquisition, Nokia plans to open its own online music store similar to iTunes of Apple Inc.

In 2007, Nokia acquired Twango, an online media sharing solution for photos, videos and other media. Twango helped Nokia integrate these media in Nokia’s latest phone models.

Nokia is also expanding to offer online services. It launched the Nokia.mobi mobile portal for the Mobile Web technology. It also released an Ad Service for mobile advertising.

Nokia released an umbrella concept for Internet services called Ovi. This can be used to share photos, download music, maps and games to Nokia phones as well as access other sites such as Flickr.

Nokia will also make the Nokia Music Store, Nokia Maps and B-Gage mobile gaming platform available on Ovi for S60 smartphones.

Nokia will also be partnering with Universal and Sony to include DRM-free music downloads with the purchase of handsets.
