Description: Novell is one of the many Information Technology stocks listed in the NASDAQ exchange. In 1983, the company started and built their base in Provo, Utah.
Prior to its date of inception, Novell has already been operating only under a different name and business scale. After its numerous acquisitions of various software companies in the 1980's through companies such as Santa Clara Systems Inc., Softcraft, and Cache Data Products, Novell has established itself as an independent computing technology development company that specializes in Netware for PC type computing devices.
Novell founders Drew Major, Kyle Powell, Dale Neibaur and Deniis Fairclough left their original company Eyring Research Institute, and initiate an effort to put up a company that focuses on data systems and software.
Since each of the people involved has their own expertise and experiences acquired from their previous occupation, the group soon went on to develop their own software interests, causing some of the original founders to leave the then Novell Data Systems. Dennis Fairclough was the only one left, and then later on was joined in by Ray Noorda. The other former members formed another company called SuperSet, still supporting Novell's product technology.
A proprietary server tailored for the Motorola 6800 CPU is the proprietary server that became Novell's first product. This hardware is capable of supporting 6 units of MUX ports for every board, under a maximum of 4 board units of every server utilizing a star topology of cabling on twisted pairs.
One of the most significant products of Novell is the SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 product series. This is the first enterprise class server of Linux that offers Xen hypervisor virtualization. SLED or SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop that sport a different and user friendly graphical user interface. This platform also featured three dimensional display abilities based on XGL.
This company is also the firm responsible for developing the first network operating system known as ShareNet, which was later made to operate under Intel operating systems and since then had a name change. Certain NetWare products of Novell were known to be of multi-platform operability under all the PC type operating systems. Aside from the desktop-type computing devices, Novell also developed versions of their products to the DOS market.
Novell has also been able to acquire security information and event management technology from the company that it had acquired, a company called e-Security, Inc. Through this acquisition, Novell was able to come up with its own kind of software known as Sentinel Security Event Manager.
