Description: Olitec is the brainchild of Olivier Lejeune, who at 18 years old constructed an innovative and low cost modem. The positive response to his magazine advertisement set the foundation to start his company for marketing and expansion. The once garage-based company soon moved to an industrial park in Nancy, France in 1985 and from there Olitec (Olivier + technology) was officially founded. In 1996 the company listed its shares in Nouveau Marche.
Lejeune’s death in an airplane crash in 1988 prompted his mother, Jacqueline Lejeune to take over the management of the company. Jacqueline Lejeune is the Chairman and CEO of Olitec, with Jean-Marie Lejeune as the Deputy CEO and Marie-Claire Evert as the General Secretary. As of July 2008, Olitec has been operating as a subsidiary of Proximania SA when it acquired a majority stake in the company from the Lejeune family.
The company is the French leader and pioneer in the design, manufacture, and marketing of modems and other electronic products. Apart from modems, Olitec offers MP3 players, ADSL routers, adapters, fax modems, wireless network cards, portable DVD readers and USB internet telephones.
By 1995, Olitec was able to hold a very strong market position in France, with a share of 42.8%. This enabled the company to launch business in other countries like the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Belgium. Its main competitor for the past years has been France Telecom.
The company introduced the first standalone modem in 1996. By 1998 they launched the SmartMemory modem featuring a 4 MB flash memory card (SmartMemory card), LCD display and a remote control. The modem is able to send and receive fax, serves as a full-duplex speakerphone, answering machine and provides caller ID. In 1999 they launched the first cordless modem using DECT (Digitally Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) technology – the WaveMemory.
With the arrival of ADSL, Olitec also released its line of ADSL solutions. The line includes cable and wireless ADSL router modems (SX200, SX500, WF200, WF500), a USB ADSL modem, ADSL PCI Card, wireless USB Adapter and wireless PC Card.
Olitec and its engineers have full control of the design and manufacture of its products. It is the only French manufacturer to have in-house development of fax and telecommunication software.
