America Online’s protocol AOL is a proprietary
protocol used by AOL software to connect to the AOL network. This
protocol AOL is different than the standard TCP/IP protocol that non-AOL
users use to go online. In addition, AOL’s AIM Instant Messenger uses a
protocol AOL calls “OSCAR.” OSCAR is a closed protocol used only by
official AOL products to communicate with one another. A similar
protocol AOL instant messengers occasionally use is the TOC protocol. In
the case of the TOC protocol, AOL made the specifications available so
that third parties could create chat clients capable of basic chats. TOC
stands for “Talk to Oscar” and is used to allow non-AOL clients to talk
to AOL clients. A second version of TOC, TOC 2, is currently supported
by AOL. Like TOC, TOC 2 acts as a wrapper for the OSCAR protocol. Though
TOC and TOC 2 enable third party developers to create compatible
clients, they lack the features of OSCAR. OSCAR remains closed. OSCAR
stands for Open System for Communication in Realtime. Though OSCAR is a
closed protocol, AOL has released a Software Developers Kit that allows
developers to create clients that communicate with AOL clients using the
OSCAR protocol. AOL hasn’t officially released the exact specifications.
