Protocol AOLTB is associated with AOL Toolbar. The
AOL Toolbar is an add-on to the Web browser that allows users to quickly
access AOL Mail, Radio, and Weather as well as customize the buttons to
include RSS feeds, widgets, and other goodies. While there may or may
not be an underlying protocol AOLTB involved in the toolbar, there are a
number of files and processes involved including AOLTB.dll and
AOLTBSERVER.exe. The AOLTBSERVER.exe file is the executable file
required to launch the AOL Toolbar while the AOLTB.dll is a dynamic link
library file required of the toolbar and its protocol AOLTB. Because the
AOL Toolbar is a simple Web helper object in the form of a toolbar, it’s
unlikely that an actual protocol AOLTB has been designed for it.
However, it is possible that AOL needs a proprietary means of retrieving
data from the AOL servers in which case a specific protocol AOLTB may
exist. However, as of now, information detailing any such protocol is
scarce, perhaps even non-existent. In the meantime, when you encounter
AOLTB, you’re most likely encountering the AOL Toolbar or one of its
files.
