Used in conjunction with MIME in email messages as
well as other applications such as news readers, protocol CID, or
Content-ID Uniform Resource Locator, helps the HTML refer to the data or
images referenced in the message. Protocol CID is a URL scheme that was
defined in 1998 in RFC 2392. The form for protocol CID is detailed in
the RFC 1998 document with the formats content-id = url-addr-spec and
cid-url = “cid” “:” content id specified. No two CIDs can be identical
as each must be globally unique. One technique commonly used by
messaging systems is adding a time/date stamp and the local host’s
domain name as part of the content ID. Protocol CID is closely related
to MID (Message ID). In fact both protocol CID and MID are described
together in RFC 2392 and both concepts were originally part of Tim
Berners-Lee’s vision for the World Wide Web. In messages that do not
contain CID, the MID refers to the entire message; a CID within a
message refers to a specific body part of the message. A single message
can contain several message body parts referenced by the same CID.
