Details: Protocol defined
How do you define protocol? That depends on the
context in which you are using the word. For example, in diplomatic
circles, following protocol is essential. In this case, protocol
involves following established rules, tradition, and etiquette. In
computing and networking terms, you can define protocol as a set of
standardized rules dictating how computers interact with one another
which is similar to how diplomacy works. Computers from all around the
world come in various configurations with different operating systems,
hardware, and software installed. Because few computers vary
significantly and because there are so many different ways for computers
to communicate, each interaction needs to define protocol before
communications can take place. A computer protocol expressed beforehand
tells each involved computer how to communicate with one another. Since
major communications methods have standardized, agreed upon protocols,
computers recognizing those protocols can exchange information. Usually,
an authority will define protocol for a given communications method such
as someone from a computer science university, a software developer, or
a technology’s primary developer. The World Wide Web Consortium and the
Internet Engineering Task Force are two organizations that help
standardize and define protocol, particularly for protocols involving
the Web and the Internet. Other standardization organizations are also
involved in defining protocols.
