Though technically not a protocol, feed URI
schemes flag documents in feed formats such as RSS or Atom to be served
using the HTTP protocol. Feeds are used to push content to subscribers.
For example, RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. A website or blog
may opt to use RSS to syndicate information. When a user clicks on the
RSS feed link and “subscribes” to the feed, syndicated content will then
be “pushed” to that user’s feed reader. Though protocol feed is
non-standardized, it is occasionally used. When protocol feed is used as
a clickable hyperlink such as “feed://domain.com/feed.atom” the feed
launches a news aggregator to display the feed’s content. URI schemes
are at the top level of the URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) naming
structure. They are expressed with the URI scheme’s name followed by a
colon such as “http:” or “feed:” Schemes are supposed to be registered
with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) in which case they
are then considered official. Because protocol feed has not been
registered with IANA and because it is in common use, it is considered
non-official. That’s not to say that someday protocol feed won’t be
registered. In the past, a pre-draft specifying the feed URI scheme was
written by Dare Obasanjo with the intention of enabling one-click feed
subscriptions.
