Details: Protocol H
Protocol H is actually a collection, or suite, of
protocol used in audio, video, and data communications. The standard
most often referred to when the term protocol H is used is the H.323
standard which lays out the foundation for data, audio, and video
communications over IP networks such as the Internet. Within protocol H
are a number of specific protocols covering digital video broadcasting,
security and authentication, channel usage, call transfers, call
parking, call waiting, video stream for transport, real time transport,
and more. The International Telecommunications Union recommends protocol
H (H.323). International Telecommunications Union is responsible for
setting multimedia communications standards for LANs that do not
guarantee Quality of Service. Because this type of LAN is widely used in
business, protocol H serves as a foundation for multimedia
communications across a broad range of IP networks and technologies.
Within the suite of H protocols are many different protocols, each with
their own specifications. While many of the protocol names include the
letter H, others such as DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) do not. Like
other protocol suites such as TCP/IP, these protocols fall into several
layers including: Application, Presentation, Session, Transport,
Network, Data Link, and Physical.
