The protocol ITPC is used in conjunction with
iTunes and podcast feeds. Using protocol ITPC, it’s possible for users
to receive iTunes podcasts via a subscription, much like RSS feeds. In
order for protocol ITPC to work properly, the computer must first have
the iTunes software installed. Once installed, a simple click on an
iTunes podcast feed link is all that’s needed. Once activated, protocol
ITPC launches iTunes and plays the podcast. Rather than seeing the URL
with the familiar “http://” protocol in the address, an iTunes podcast
subscription link features “itpc://” in the address. While protocol ITPC
is commonly used with iTunes podcasts, other protocols are also used
including standard RSS feeds as well as direct access to podcasts via
the iTunes Podcast Directory. For users who want to include one-click
podcast subscription links, using the ITPC protocol is about as easy as
it gets. Simply replace the “http” of the feed’s address with “itpc.”
This allows users to simply click the link and iTunes does the rest.
Users must have iTunes installed, though. Because of this requirement,
many users provide traditional RSS links as well.
