Details: Protocol MMS
Protocol MMS is Microsoft Media Server, a
proprietary protocol from Microsoft used to stream content via Windows
Media Services and Windows Media Player. Microsoft stopped using
protocol MMS when it released Windows Media Services 9 in favor of the
RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) but continued to support protocol
MMS until 2008. Though no longer officially supported, protocol MMS is
still used in some versions of Windows Media Player as a rollover
protocol. For example, when encountering the “mms://” URL, versions of
Windows Media Player offering backwards compatibility with MMS will
attempt to connect using other protocols such as RTSP over UDP or over
TCP. If those two attempts do not work, a third attempt using Windows
Media HTTP Streaming Protocol is tried. In addition to the proprietary
protocol MMS, the acronym MMS is also associated with Multimedia
Messaging Service which is a standardized means of sending multimedia
messages to and from mobile devices. For example, when snapping a
digital photo with a mobile phone and then sending that picture to
another user, MMS is used. MMS is also used to send ringtones, deliver
videos, and deliver other multimedia content to mobile devices.
Associated Protocol MMS Applications:
Windows Media Services, Windows Media Player, NetShow Services
