Protocol MYIM is a URL protocol used by MySpace.
With protocol MYIM in place, it is possible for users to click a
contact’s link and add the contact to MySpaceIM, the instant messenger
application for MySpace. MySpaceIM protocols such as protocol MYIM are
proprietary protocols. However, many Web sites have posted “unofficial
MySpaceIm” specifications online. These unofficial specifications are
based on information most likely gleaned through reverse engineering.
According to some of the unofficial documents, protocol MYIM is
apparently used as a URL scheme. Using a URL that includes URL-encoded
parameters and commands, it is possible for a user to simply click a
link and carry out the encoded commands. In particular, the Add User
command frequently mentioned in protocol MYIM discussions makes adding a
user to a MySpaceIM contact list a simple matter of clicking a link. In
addition to the MySpaceIM protocol, an application called MyIM exists.
In this case, the application is a plug-in for AOL’s Instant Messenger.
Though it shares the same name as the MYIM protocol used with MySpace
Instant Messenger, it is a different application altogether.
