Details: Protocol Tomtomhome
Protocol tomtomhome is an experimental URI scheme
proposed to the Internet Engineering Task Force by the makers of TomTom
portable navigation units in May 2007. The TomTom Home application is
the management software used in conjunction with the TomTom devices. The
protocol tomtomhome specifies a syntax containing a number of commands
such as install, address, location, navigateto, showonmap, addfavourite,
and execute. Within the syntax described are: hier-part, authority,
scheme, command, query, fragment, argument, city, street, housenumber,
longitude-latitude, longitude, and latitude. Using a URI scheme such as
protocol tomtomhome, it is possible to reference specific files or
locations as well as provide commands and arguments. For example, using
protocol tomtomhome with the showonmap command and coordinates, a single
URI with an absolute path ensures that the location is shown on the
device as commanded. Protocol tomtomhome is displayed much like other
protocols with the protocol name followed by a protocol and a series of
forward slashes. In this case, three slashes are used as in
“tomtomhome:///”. Documentation listed on the Internet Engineering Task
Force in response to the request to register tomtomhome as a protocol
indicates that the protocol may not be officially registered. Among the
suggestions made was a suggestion to use a generic name for the protocol
rather than the product name.
