California and founded in 2005, TVU Networks offers a cost-effective way
for broadcasters to deliver live television over the Internet. Using its
own technologies and protocol, TVU Networks is capable of sending live,
high definition television signals to millions of worldwide viewers
using a single broadband connection and the TVUBroadcast appliance. For
broadcasters, this is extremely cost effective. For users, all that’s
needed is a media player capable of handling the TVU technologies and
protocol. TVU offers a free media player designed specifically for this:
the TVUPlayer. At the heart of the technology is what TVU Networks calls
its Real-Time Packet Replication (RPR) technology which may or may not
be an actual protocol. TVU viewers each share the bandwidth burden
across the entire P2P network when viewing live television using this
technology. Because of this, bandwidth requirements don’t go up as more
viewers tune in and all viewers receive a strong signal. In order to
watch TVU using this protocol, TVU viewers need to download and install
the TVUPlayer. Depending on your Web browser and if you want to watch
TVU channels via your browser, you may need to install a browser plug-in
as well as the TVUPlayer.
