RFC 3463, Enhanced Mail System Status Codes,
discusses protocol undefined error messages in the context of messaging
systems. In this document, the need for a standard system for reporting
email errors is discussed and a standard set of status codes proposed.
In the case of protocol undefined, an error message displayed using the
X.0.XXX syntax is classified as “other or undefined” which means that no
additional information about the error is available. This error message
is used when only the class of the error is known. Many other protocol
undefined messages are described in this document including the Mail
Delivery Protocol Status. In this case, the protocol undefined syntax
takes the following form: X.5.0 and is classified as “other or undefined
protocol status” which means that a problem occurred with the protocol
needed to deliver the message and the problem cannot be adequately
described using the other status codes. Another protocol undefined
involves Message Content or Message Media Status. This code is expressed
as X.6.0 and is expressed as “other or undefined media error.” This code
means that the message’s content caused the message to be undeliverable.
In general, these undefined status codes are used to indicate a problem
that isn’t able to be fully described with other status codes.
