An information retrieval protocol known as Z39.50
is a client-server protocol used to find and retrieve data from remote
databases such as library systems. This is an older protocol dating back
to the 1970s dedicated to information retrieval that is generating some
interest in terms of modernizing it. Protocol Zing is an initiative to
evolve Z39.50 into a more mainstream protocol. The term “ZING” stand for
Z39.50 International – Next Generation. To make it more confusing, the
original documentation for protocol Zing on the Library of Congress’s
Web page now points to the Library of Congress’s Search Retrieval over
URL, or SRU, standard. Whether you call it protocol Zing or SRU, the
protocol is focused on searching for and retrieving information.
Protocol Zing is designed to be simple. It uses XML as well as Common
Query Language (CQL). Parameters include request and response parameters
such as operation, version, and query (mandatory request parameters) and
version, numberOfrecords. Results are also displayed in XML. With new
interest in information retrieval, Z39.50 is continuing its legacy in
new and improved forms such as protocol Zing. Other modern updates
include Z39.50 Version 4 and Z39.50 2003 Revision.
