Description: Quantex Microsystems was co-founded in 1984 by M.T. Chang, who became the first president of the company. The firm was based in Somerset, New Jersey and started as a direct manufacturer of PCs and add-on peripherals. Quantex Microsystems filed for bankruptcy last August 2000 when Fountain Technologies, Quantex's main supplier, went out of business.

The company started as a designer and producer of computers and peripherals for brands, like Pionex, Cybermax, and Inteva. Even if Quantex Microsystems cannot hope to match the pioneers of the computer industry, like Apple Computers, IBM, and Hewlett-Packard; it nonetheless became a popular brand due to its pricing. Quantex Microsystems won various publication awards for this reason.

After the shutdown of Quantex Microsystems in New Jersey, Stan Swearingen Jr., established Quantex Microsystems in the United Kingdom. But despite hard marketing efforts, the company disappeared after a year of operation. Around 2001, Quantex Microsystems UK Ltd., started operation in the same office, though the head of this group denied any connections with the old Quantex.

Quantex Microsystem designed and manufactured PCs and add-on peripherals, such as video cards, sound cards, motherboards, modems, monitors, disk drivers, input devices, SCSI controllers, LAN/Network cards, speakers, tape backup products, and ZIP drives.

The company also manufactured notebooks which are observed by many expert computer users to be akin to those developed and released by Dell. Both computers were made by Compal. But despite being an OEM/ODM company, Quantex Microsystems also incorporated peripherals from other manufacturers into their own PCs -- like Ensoniq, Creative Labs, Aureal, Aztech Labs, Joytech, Biostar, Asus, Gigabyte, and so on.

Quantex-designed machines are compatible with Windows operating systems, while some managed to create a set of applications and controllers to use it with other platforms like Linux and FreeBSD.

Quantex computers are no longer sold in the market today. Its main site is no longer active, and support or contact information is unavailable. Despite its shutdown in the market, some Quantex users have taken the liberty to put up a website containing product information, device drivers, guides and FAQs, and applications normally used and run on Quantex machines.

The computers developed by Quantex Microsystems are said to be the foundation of today's "Alienware" gaming computer systems.
