Description: Ralink Technology Corp. is an IT company started in 2001 in Cupertino, California. It specializes in the design and manufacture of chipsets that enable Wi-Fi technology. Its products are reportedly used in approximately 12% of the Wi-Fi devices in the market. The company’s headquarters is currently located in Hsinchu, Taiwan and is under the leadership of the company’s present presidend, Rick Jeng. Ralink is also an active member of the IEEE 802.11 standards committee.
Among the investors for the Ralink Technology Corp. are Asustek Computer, CDIB, Hotung, ICSI, InveStar, Quanta Computer, SinoStar Venture Capital and Sycamore Ventures.
The chipsets produced are used in consumer routers made by Gigabyte Technology, Linksys, D-Link and Belkin. They have also been installed in Wi-fi adaptors used in PCI, USB, ExpressCards, PC Cards and PCI Express interfaces.
One of the more popular products that makes us of the Ralink chip is the Nintendo Wi-fi USB Connector. The chipset was installed to allow Nintendo Wiis and DSs to form an internet connection through a home computer.
The newer chip models RT2600 and RT2501 are said to be improvements of the older RT2400 and RT2500.
The latest addition to Ralink’s product line is a chipset they named the 802.11n RT2800 chipsets. It was one of the products included in the Wi-Fi alliance 802.11n draft 2.0 core technology test bed. The chipset has also been included in the test beds of Wireless Multimedia Extensions Power Save (WMM-PS) and Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS).
Although the company’s primary products chipsets, the company has also produced a set of GPL drivers for Linux. The rt2x00 project maintains drivers for the RT2500. However, at present, Ralink has stopped providing support or updating firmware for the RT2500 chipsets.
Ralink provides and distributes firmware for its more recent chipsets to help people adjust appropriately. The firmware can also be freely redistributed for the convenience of their patrons.
Unlike most manufacturers of Wi-Fi chipsets Ralink does not require a non-disclosure agreement with their clients. They provide necessary documentation without it; thus encouraging clients to use and redistribute their products. One of the popular distributors of Ralink products is a Japan based company called Kaga Electronics Co., Limited.
