Description: Marcel Môme started the Sagem Company in 1925. The name stands for Society for General Application of Electricity and Mechanics. Its French name is actually Société de l’Électricté et de la Mécanique. When strictly translated to English this means Company of General Applications of Electricity and Mechanics.

The company was originally created to manufacture military devices, power distribution equipment, electrical components, cameras and projectors. This changed in 1942 when the French Ministry of Telecommunications requested the company to create a new mode of communication. The device called telex printer was the company’s response to that particular request.

The company specializes in two fields. One of which is communication. This handles mobile phones and the like which is housed under the name Sagem Telecommunications. The second is the defense and security named Sagem Défense Sécurité. The defense mechanisms are further divided into three groups. These are Defense, which handles guided weaponry, military aeronautics and navigation. The Avionics and Piloting subgroup handles observation drones, secure terminals, cryptology, biometric systems and optronics. The third subgroup is Avionics and Optronics.

SAGEM was chosen by France for defense contracts. In 1961, it was chosen to create the Inertial Navigation Systems for ballistic missiles and the optical and navigational systems for the first ballistic submarines. The system uses motion sensors to track the position, orientation and velocity of vehicles. The information is then reported to and processed in a computer.

SAFRAN has acquired the two main divisions of Sagem as subsidiaries. Though Sagem has maintained its product line and intellectual property, they are now listed under the SAFRAN Group. Presently, the CEO of the Defense Group is Jean-Lin Fournereaux; which has had reported sales of 858 million Euros at the end of the 2007 fiscal year.

Another product is the Sigma 30. This is an inertial navigation system that was designed to be used with mortars, light guns, howitzers and multiple rocket launchers. The device is being produced for over 25 international programs. It is also being used for larger systems.

The Sperwer device from Sagem is a 3-meter-long aerial vehicle. It is piloted via a remote. It can fly at heights of over 16,000 feet for as much as five hours. It is being used in a number of companies.

The telecommunications operations of the company were expanded in the 80s and 90s. The company merged with Snecma in 2005 and formed SAFRAN. Sagem started distributing mobile phones in India in 2007, which was done under the name Blue. The telecommunications division also sells mobile phones and broadband devices.
