Description: Sansui Electric Co., Limited is an established manufacturer of audio and video equipment. It was founded by Mr. Kosaku Kikuchi on June 3, 1947 and has its main office in Tokyo. Its current president, Takeshi Nakamichi, is also the president of Nakamichi, another electronic company. Both companies are owned by Grande Holdings which is based in Hong Kong.

Sansui started as a transformer manufacturing company until the 1960’s when it moved on to developing audio and video equipment. By religiously producing high-quality Hi-Fi components, Sansui rapidly grew popular in the consumer electronics market and become one of the foremost leaders in the industry.

A few of Sansui’s pioneer products include the first audio transformer and the first high powered tube-transistor amplifier. It was also the first to produce the matrix “surround sound” in 1970, the stereo AM in 1976, and the digital sound processing in 1983.

Around 1982, audiophiles praised Sansui’s AU-D101 amplifier and the more powerful AU-D33. These amplifiers used a complex servo system that results in better harmonic distortion. These amplifiers are well matched to a pair of CODA III speakers from KEF, a loudspeaker manufacturing company.

In the 1980s, as other electronic companies gained popularity, the company retreated from the U.S. market. They ceased exportation and instead focused on Japanese market while still continuously manufacturing high-end components. Its master pieces are said to be under the Alpha series which were continually produced until 2001 when its corporate headquarters in Yokohama was closed.

When Sansui started producing mass video products; it resulted to the company’s brand name being used by other manufacturing companies in the late 1990s. Thus, Sansui became an umbrella company for relabeled products like Orion Electronics.

Sansui’s distribution network currently extends to more than ten countries in Africa, seven in Asia, a dozen in the Middle-East, and as far as Russia, North America, and Oceania.

Today, Sansui produces home audio and video products also designed and marketed by the company. Sansui’s wide range of home and video products include home theater systems, DVD players, mini and micro systems, AV receivers, component systems, portables, portable MP3 players, Discmans, and 5.1 speaker systems. Its television products consist of LCD or plasma and rear projection televisions.
