Description: The hardware manufacturer, Sapphire Technology was created in Hong Kong. It makes a number of hardware devices, computer parts and digital devices. The company makes graphics cards for personal computers, motherboards, TV tuner cards, digital audio players and workstations.

Sapphire Technology uses ATI GPUs (graphics processing units) and chipsets. A consistent partnership with ATI allows Sapphire to make most of the ATI-powered video cards in the world. Sapphire also has a standing agreement with AMD for making computer parts.

The products are sold via a number of retailers. This allows the products to be available in a wide array of countries. In the US alone, several companies are distributing Sapphire devices. Some of the US retailers are Amazon.com, Avnet, Bell Micro, Leader Tech, Synnex and the like.

They have two facilities that have combined abilities to make 1.8 million video cards in a month. Both are located in Dongguan, China. The International Organization of Standardization has awarded both facilities with an ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 accreditation.

Sapphire buys printed circuit boards from other manufacturers. It then adds the surface mount device (SDM) parts. The assembly is done by machines running an assembly line. The reflow soldering method is used to solder the parts together. ATI technology is used to add the memory and graphics processing unit (GPU) for each card.

Sapphire was one of the first companies to develop a video card that uses an HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) connector. This graphics card was unveiled in 2006 with the name Radeon X1600 Pro HDMI. The card used the ATI Radeon X1600 Pro graphics board. The graphics card allowed users the process both uncompressed high-definition video and audio. It was created so that users can add the capability to play Blu-ray and HD-DVDV format discs on any computer. The card needs to be installed with an optical drive for the computer to be able to read the discs.

Aside from graphics cards, Sapphire also makes main boards and multimedia products. The main boards are often branded with AMD as they mostly use AMD parts. The company also manufactures TV tuner and DV board, digital photo frames and digital audio solutions.
