Its inception was on June 1951 but was then named the Seiko Electric Industries Co., Ltd. By August of 1960, the company name became Sekonic Co., Ltd. and then, Fukushima Sekonic Corporation on June of 1974. Presently, they are known simply as Sekonic Corporation. Sekonic’s subsidiary companies are all ISO9001 certified.
Main stockholders of Sekonic include Mizuho Corporate Bank, Ltd., CBC Corporation, and Nippon Life Insurance Company. Meanwhile, their primary clientele are Konica Minolta Business Technologies, Inc. and PENTAX Corporation.
Currently, Sekonic’s top executives include Hiroshi Arai as the Representative Director and President since 2006 and Kayuzuki Sumida as Executive Officer, Managing Director, and Leader of Equipment Business since this year. Also included is Hiroshi Hirosawa as Leader of Electric Business Unit, Managing Director, Chairman of a Sekonic subsidiary, and Executive Officer since this year as well.
The Sekonic P-1 was the first exposure meter the company introduced. Over the years as recognition for their exposure meters line flourished, their L-518 and Sekonic Digipro X-1 meters were brought by NASA on their February 1984 Space Shuttle mission.
As worldwide demand of Sekonic products grew, the company started constructing the factory for their subsidiary, the Ikeda Factory Co., Ltd., in June of 1959. It was opened for business by December of the same year. The said factory was recognized as a ‘JIS designed factory’ in less than 2 years.
In March of 1970, the company established their first subsidiary called Sekonic Electronics Corporation which concentrated on the creation of their exposure meter products. On September of 1972, they had also established the Egawa Plant Corporation for manufacturing components and a variety of Dry Type copiers U-Bix and bunch wires.
By June of 1985, Sekonic also founded the Elix Co., Ltd. for manufacturing their electro luminescence products. Elix later changed their name to Hakodate Sekonic Incorporated. Sekonic then decided to expand the manufacture of their copiers. This led them to establish the Aizu Sekonic Corporation on April of 1988. On April 1993, the Egawa Plant Corporation acquired the Aizu Sekonic Corporation, and the Fukushima Sekonic Inc acquired Aizu Sekonic Corporation in 2000.
On April of year 2000, Sekonic collaborated with Konica Corporation for the complete consignment of nationwide production for their copiers’ enclosures. The company’s Ikeda Factory name was changed to the Azumino Factory and Konica’s business office in Hachioji, Tokyo also became Sekonic’s Hachioji branch for manufacturing their copiers’ enclosures.
