Description: The Siemens Corporation was founded in Berlin, Prussia on October 12, 1847 by Werner von Siemens. The company was established based on his telegraph invention which implemented a needle to identify letter sequencing as opposed to utilizing the Morse code. Initially named Telegraphen-Bauanstalt von Siemens & Halske, it began operation on the day of its establishment.

By 1990, the acquisition of Nixdorf Computer brought about the creation of the Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme Corporation (SNI). The merger directly affected the Information Services division of Siemens which was transferred to the newly created enterprise. At present, Peter Löscher serves as the President and CEO with other members of the management team being Wolfgang Dehen (CEO Energy Sector), Heinrich Hiesinger (CEO Industry Sector), and Jim Reid-Anderson (CEO Healthcare Sector).

Functioning as a distinct and separate entity, SNI sold the SINIX and BS2000 operating system including the BS2000 mainframe computer along with numerous databases and SNI RISC based servers (RM-x00). It also distributed various software and hardware products that covered different computer platforms form PCs to SAP R/3 machines. It became the largest Information Technology company based in Europe until its eventual split up into the Wincor Nixdorf and Fujitsu Siemens corporations. Wincor focused its efforts on the retail and banking industries.

The same year that Fujitsu Siemens Computer Corporation was created, the semiconductor operation of Siemens was spun off. This resulted in the creation of the Infineon Technologies company in 1999. At the start of 2000, Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme AG established its independence and took over all non-banking related products initially produced under SNI. Other products outside the self-service area were redistributed to various functional Siemens affiliates.

Fujitsu Siemens Computer GmbH assumed the responsibility for the Server and Personal Computer product line of SNI including support for RM xxx server, PRIMERGY xxx server, PCD, PCE, and SCENIC PC & SCENIC MOBILE systems.

Main competitors of Siemens Nixdorf during its active operation include: Alcatel-Lucent, 3Com Corporation, Automated Logic, Cisco Systems, Computrols, Emerson Electric, Honeywell, Lantronix, Omron Electronics, Philips, Rockwell Automation, Samsung, Schneider Electric (Square D), and Toshiba.

Using an American organization called Siemens Foundation, the company allots funds for deserving teachers and students. It provides scholarship grants for both team and individual entrants. Each year, the company awards close to US$2 million in scholarships.
