Description: Thin Tran founded Sigma Designs in 1982 in Milpitas, California, USA as a provider of high-quality semiconductors. After being exposed in journals such as Slashdot and The Inquirer, the company published a source code in August 2002.

Sigma Designs creates products targeting key markets such as IPTV setup boxes, HD-DVD and Blu-ray players/recorders, portable media players, digital media adapters, and UWB connectivity products. The company has formed alliances with well-known firms like Cisco Systems, Alcatel-Lucent, and Microsoft.

In 2004, the success of Sigma Designs faltered after releasing REALmagic MPEG-4 Video Codec. The design of this product was found to be based on a rival product, Xvid. When Sigma Designs was asked to redesign REALmagic, it was merely rearranged in an attempt to hide the Xvid coding.

Despite the controversy associated with the company, it has still produced a number of revolutionary products such as media processors, VXP image processors and UWB (ultra-wideband).

The company’s collections of media processors include the SMP8650 line. This particular line features the only single chip that can support HD IPTV set-top boxes. This product has quality high-definition features. It is also sold at a very competitive market price.

Sigma’s EM630L series was designed for optical quality. It is best used for DVD players, portable media players, and digital television.

Both the GF9452 and GF9450 collections of VXP image processors offer high quality standards. The GF9452 is the first image processor of its kind with full dual-channel functions. The GF9450 offers quality option for the money of the consumers, as it performs most efficiently when coupled with the VIPER Application Builder Software.

The company’s line of ultra-wideband chips allow supplementary products to perform with ease. They also produce high-speed and quality wireless video and audio streaming.

In 2008, Sigma Designs signed a partnership with a privately owned company called Monster Cable to create advanced wireless solutions for the distribution of HDMI home entertainment. With Sigma Designs meeting the quality parameters of Monster, as claimed by Monster Founder Noel Lee, the partnership produced the Monster Wireless Digital Express HD.

Sigma Designs is a member of several organizations including 3D @ Home Consortium, Association of Radio Industries and Businesses, Advanced Televisions Systems Committee and Digital Living Network Alliance.
