Description: SiS Corporation is a company that primarily develops motherboard chipsets. The company started producing chipsets in Hsinchu Science and Industrial Park, Taipei. It officially registered with a capital amounting to $65 million. The company’s paid-in capital totaled $200 million after the Board carried out an approval of $75 million share rights.

Later in the 1990s, SiS Corporation decided to spend a greater amount of its resources in expanding the fabrication facilities for the chipsets it makes. The company acquired Rise Technology because its MP6 microprocessor was a bust in the market. Rise Technology is microprocessor manufacturing company that lived short. It produced the Intel x86 MMX compatible mP6 processor.

SiS, or Silicon Integrated Systems, started public trading in the Taiwan Stock Exchange in August 1997.

The company established branches in other countries to market their products worldwide. Branches opened in Beijing, Chongqing, Taipei, Hongkong, Suzhou, and Santa Clara. It also reached other parts of the world after establishing a subsidiary based in the United States of America.

SiS Corporation competed with a wide range of companies handling products involving computers, optoelectronic industries, semiconductors, and telecommunication. It is renowned in the local industry for its innovative product, 1M Mask ROM.

The chipset manufacturing corporation developed the chipset 496/407. This 486-age chipset supported the PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) bus. This was then innovative because other chips supported the older VLB and ISA buses. Motherboards equipped with 496/407 chipset were compatible with the Intel Pentium processors.

SiS positioned itself as a low-cost chip manufacturer after the success of this chipset. The SiS 5569, SiS 530, and SiS 5598 were later on released, all at comparatively lower prices.

SiS and ALi (Acer Laboratories Incorporated) were the sole companies primarily licensed to make third party chipsets for Pentium 4. With this license, the former developed the 648 chipset.

In addition to its participation in the industry, SiS was also involved in developing the Xbox 360, the game console of Microsoft. It designed a multimedia chipset for Xbox 360, so that the console can handle images and performances. This chipset was also compatible with the PCI Express innovation. It had enough bandwidth among Southbridge and Northbridge chipsets.
