Description: SMC is a network solutions company. In 1971 it was established as a hardware manufacturer and it opened its main office in Irvine, California, USA. As the company grew, it put regional offices throughout Asia, Africa, Europe, Japan and America.

The products of SMC include switches, network cards, broadband and wireless routers, storage servers, IP cameras, and VDSL products.

By the year 1997, SMC performed a merger with Accton Technology Corporation, an outsourcing corporation for communications and networking solutions. The merge was successful, as it combined Accton’s streamline of manufacturing with SMC’s engineering, design, and marketing. The merger resulted in SMC becoming a subsidiary of Accton.

Arcadyan, the joint venture of Accton-Philips, also supplemented the success of SMC. It added more resources to SMC.

SMC creates components for LAN that makes possible the exchange of data between sub-networks. It has three components: a central chassis, a decentralized backbone, and the stack.

A central chassis has many available configuration options. Because it has a central location, It provides easy maintenance.

The decentralized backbone works by connecting several switches or routers that range from small to medium sizes, allocated through the network. This connection performs with varying speed depending on the distance and the used interfaces.

The stack is composed of a number of independent components jointly connected in one location. It provides better overall performance.

SMC also provides other solutions such as workgroup switches, wireless bridging for companies situated at multiple buildings, gigabit switches through Ethernet, broadband access that route phone calls over the Web for setting long-distance to local call rates, wireless connections having comparable speeds with wired counterparts, and smart switches handling traffic control for application data transfers.

The company provided its services to the PGA Tournament. With the wireless bridge technology, players were able to view ongoing matches right from their hotel rooms. The wireless bridge transferred rate at a speed of 2.4GHz.

In 2008, CCTV (China Central TV Station) employed SMC’s TigerSwitch 10/100/1000 Managed Switches for the monitoring of multimedia direct broadcast system.
