Description: The Sony Ericsson company was started in 2001. At that time, Swedish company Ericsson was focusing on making mobile phones. Philips was the one making the chips for its devices were being made at that time.

The parts for Ericsson were compromised in March 2000 after a fire started at the manufacturing company. This delayed the production and operations of Ericsson. The company later decided to separate its mobile division, as it entered an agreement with the Japanese company Sony to form a joint venture.

Sony Ericsson was formed to take advantage of the Sony Corporation’s experience in producing consumer electronics and Ericsson’s status as an industry leader in telecommunications. Both of the holding companies no longer produce individual mobile phones.

The company bought software developer UIQ Technology in February 2007. UIQ was previously owned by Symbian Ltd., which is a company that primarily develops platforms for smart phones. In October 2007, Sony Ericsson announced that half of the shares for UIQ will be sold to Motorola, another mobile phone manufacturer.

The international headquarters for Sony Ericsson is located in London. Other facilities for research and development are located in the UK, the US, India, Pakistan, China, Germany, Japan and Sweden.

The President of the company is Hideki Komiyama while the Executive Vice President is Anders Runevad. There are currently 9,400 people employed in Sony Ericsson companies. 2,500 companies hold agreements with the company to act as contractors.

Aside from mobile phones, the company also makes wireless systems and voice and data devices, hi-tech accessories and mobile music devices.

Sony Ericsson’s mobile phones fall into the following categories: Walkman, Cyber-Shot, BRAVIA, UIQ, and Xperia.

The XPeria line was started with the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 unit released in February 2008. It is one of the most recent brands and was one of the first to use the Microsoft platform for handheld devices.

The UIQ phones use the platform from the acquired subsidiary. The P800 was the first of the line, launched in 2003. These phones often have a QWERTY keypad partnered with a touch screen. Originally started with the P series, it later grew to include the M and G series.
