Company: Sound Blaster
Description: Sound Blaster is a line of sound cards developed by Creative Technology Ltd, a Singapore-based company. Creative Technology was established in 1981 through collaborative investment between Ng Kai Wa and Sim Wong Hoo.
Today, Sim Wong Hoo is the Chairman and CEO, with Ng Keh Long as CFO and Phil O’Shaughnessy as the Director of Corporate Communications.
The company was initially focused on developing computers for language reproduction. This venture failed and the company refocused on developing sound cards for gaming. The earlier versions of their sound cards were the Creative Music System and the Game Blaster.
By 1989, Creative Technology achieved success and made computer history with their release of the Sound Blaster sound card.
With the release of Intel 386 processor and the Microsoft Windows 3.0 OS, the Sound Blaster further increased sales. This accessory reached top sales in the market. With the release of the new-generation Sound Blaster Pro sound card, Creative Technology’s position in the PC industry was elevated.
The Sound Blaster card soon faced a number of competitors – Logitech SA; ATI Technologies, Inc., Guillemot Corporation, Elsa AG, Matrox Graphics, and Trust SA. This prompted Sound Blaster to launch its own brand of 16-bit sound cards (Sound Blaster 16) as the others released the first of its kind by the end of 1991.
Creative continued to release new products in the Sound Blaster line, and gained particular success with the Sound Blaster AWE 64 in 1996. The Sound Blaster Live in 1998 was a huge hit in the market. At that time, the company was able to extend its Upgrade Kit line to include DVD-ROMs.
Creative continued on in 2001 with the Sound Blaster Audigy line that featured the Audigy processor, an improved version of the processor from Sound Blaster Live!
By 2005, they came out with Sound Blaster X-Fi , short for Extreme Fidelity. Its performance is estimated at 10,000 MIPS, about 24 times higher than the Audigy processor. Their latest releases in the X-Fi line focus on surround sound, 3D positional audio and realistic sound effects for the ultimate PC gaming experience.
In 1992, Creative Technology went public, making it the first Singaporean company to be listed on the NASDAQ exchange. In the same year, it teamed up with E-mu Systems that resulted in the release of the Wave Blaster add-on board for the Sound Blaster 16. By March 1993, Creative already acquired E-mu Systems.
