Description: Star Micronics is a company best known today as a developer and manufacturer of different types of printers. The years 1985 to 1995 alone saw the company selling over ten million printers, roughly one million printer units per year.

Star Micronics was founded in July 1950 as Star Manufacturing Company, Limited. It was based in Tegoshi, Shizuoka, Japan with a total capital of ¥500,000. The company was first conceived as a manufacturer and seller of camera parts and wrist watches. Star Manufacturing diversified in August 1958 when they started selling cam type automatic lathes, a machine or tool used for sanding, drilling, cutting, and various other uses of such nature.

In October 1960, Star Micronics established itself once again as a top manufacturer of wrist watches via its partnership with Citizen Watch Company, Limited which now goes under the name Citizen Holdings Company, Limited. The partnership was known as the Tokai Seimitsu Company, Limited. In September 1965, Tokai Seimitsu was fully absorbed by Star Manufacturing and changed its name to Star Micronics Company, Limited.

September 1971 saw the company moving to its present location in Nakayoshida, Japan. This was also the year that Star Micronics started manufacturing and selling electronic buzzers. The company continued with their development of lathes and in October 1976, they started manufacturing CNC automatic lathes. This type of lathe is electronically controlled by a computer menu interface.

Star Micronics America, Incorporated was established in January 1977 in New York City, USA. The company began manufacturing small printers in July 1979.

The manufacturing of its computer printers started in October of 1981. This was also the year that the company’s stock was listed on the Nagoya Stock Exchange. In May 1983, the company began building its Ihara Factory in Nanatsushinya in Shimizu City, Japan. Also in September of the same year, Star Micronics Asia, Limited was established in Hong Kong. Another factory was built in Ogasa, Japan in April 1984, the Kikugawa factory. Star Micronics then established Star Micronics UK, Limited in London in November 1984. This is now known as Star Micronics Europe Limited. China was next in line in January 1989 and Star Micronics Manufacturing Dalian Company, Limited was established in Dalian, China.

The 1990s saw the company growing further with establishments in Switzerland, New York, and Germany.

The company diversified again in the year 2000 and onwards with the design, development and manufacture of speakers, microphones and receivers.
