Description: Sun Microsystems is a UNIX server provider which started in Silicon Valley, California, and was founded by Bill Joy, Andy Bechtolsheim, Scott McNealy, and Vinod Khosla in 1982.

\It established a branch in Munich, Germany in 1984. The company then branched out to other German cities – Berlin, Stuttgart, Hamburg, and Ratingen. In the same year, Sun Microsystems’ Network File System (NFS) spread as a free license product to other competing companies.

Sun gained recognition in the supercomputing business with the HPC 10000. It specialized in developing its own operating system and additional hardware for upgrading computer memory.

Sun collaborated with AOL in 1998, and launched its Java 2 specification. After this development, the company released Solaris 7, a 64-bit operating system (OS) environment used in network computing. It then obtained a renewed standard record for the SAP R/3 – now named SAP ERP, which is an application for enterprise resource planning.

Sun then cooperated with BULL AG, declaring extensive consulting services in education. It created a competence center intended for network computing innovations.

The company also provided specifications for the platform Jiro in 1999. The platform holds an independent memory management from the system and currently presents Novell’s e-Directory. The platform executes on a 64-bit Titanium processor from Intel, and was awarded in Germany for its 100th order for its 10000th server in 1999. Furthermore, it holds a record at the Transaction Processing Performance Council.

Sun became a leader in the UNIX market in 2000. It released the Sun Cluster 3.0 software, which made network file-sharing, databases, and websites more accessible.

Sun released a new computer that featured the Ultra SPARC III processor. It features copper interconnections to improve signaling. It also has an error correction code for each data interface, a memory controller that can address about 16 GB at rates reaching up to 2.4 GB per second, and the Fireplane Interconnect, which runs at 150 Megahertz.

Sun also distributes a Java platform specifically designed for Linux operating systems. They will soon release a platform with the source code of Solaris 8.
