Description: Started in 1986, Sunix is a company that specializes in the design and manufacture of input/output (I/O) controller cards. It was founded by three engineers who graduated from NTU. At present, it has about 350 employees and has its corporate headquarters located in Sin-Dian City, Taipei County, Taiwan. Arthur Lin is the currently listed Chief Executive Officer of Sunix, Inc.

It has an annual estimated sales figure of around US$80 million. Currently it controls around 45% of European, 35% of North American, and 15% of Asian I/O controller markets.

Sunix is primarily an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) supplier. During its early years, however, the company also specialized in making floppy disk drives and hard disk controller interfaces. They have also successfully designed and produced a wide variety of controller chipsets.

In 1995, Sunix became the first component manufacturer to produce the world’s first peripheral component interconnect (PCI) I/O controller card. It was the first company to introduce the PCI to serial and parallel single integrated circuit (IC) chipset interfaces. These developments greatly improved the PCI bus interface which led to the successful transition and eventual replacement of the industry standard architecture (ISA) I/O controller from the market. This was successfully done by integrating 90% of its circuitry components into one single chipset.

The company has set-up its fully automated Sin-Dian factory in 1997. It came equipped with SMT, solder, assembly and test lines, as well as a packaging line. This enabled Sunix to manufacture over 300 varieties of products.

The company introduced the world’s first serial over IP IC chipsets in 2005. These are the SUN 8989 and the SUN 8899. Both of these interface cards offer solutions for high performance IP to I/O controller interface. The product is also referred to as the “golden card”. This is because of the golden color that each of their interface cards possess, which is caused by the imported dye from Japan that they coat their cards with. The main purpose of the dye is to dissipate the heat from the card thus improving its performance and reliability.
