Description: The Norway-based Tandberg company is a manufacturer of various videoconferencing, multiplexers and video encoding systems. Initially founded by electronics engineer Vebjørn Tandberg as Tandberg’s Radio Factory (Tandbergs Radiofabrikk) in 1933, the product line consisted mainly of radios featuring built-in amplifiers and loudspeakers.

In 1952, the company produced its own version of the reel to reel tape recorder and established itself as a presence in the high-end audio market. Certified Audiophiles are aware of the immense quality that accompanies the Tandberg product name. Majority of the products produced by this company utilized DIN connectors as opposed to the RCA connectors that were the standard at the time.

The initial ISDN picture telephone produced by the company was introduced in 1989 with the fully H.320 capable version being launched sometime in 1993. This proved to be the launching pad for the introduction of more high performance systems like the Master Vision and the Grand Vision series. The Vision600 and the Compact Vision provided the desktop endpoint products of the company.

By 1999, the company became a stakeholder in the Internet Technology through the acquisition of a Norwegian company experienced in the delivery of ITU H.323 standards. This also opened the opportunity for the company to venture into VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) projects that produced Telenor which was the very first commercially available VoIP service based on the H.323 specification.

From the year 2000 onwards, the company established a firm foothold in the implementation of IP based videoconferencing technology by transforming its entire product line to be IP capable. This move paved the way for the expansion of its product line which at present covers Video Systems Management, Network Infrastructure, Multipoint Control Units, High Definition SIP, Unified Communication, Data Streaming and Recording, Web Conferencing and Firewall Traversal Security.

The Firewall Traversal technology implemented by Tandberg allowed the delivery of H.323 video endpoints to any receiving system that resides behind any (or numerous) NAT and firewall devices. To date, the main competitors of the company are Aethra, VTEL, Lifesize Communications, Radvision, Sony, and Polycom.

The success of the company brought about collaboration with Cisco Systems to introduce the Cisco 7985G desktop videophone in September of 2005. By September 2007, Codian, a rival videoconferencing developer, was acquired by Tandberg for $270 million.
