Tandy Drivers
Company: Tandy
Description: Tandy Corporation started out as a leather goods company in Fort Worth, Texas. Tandy was founded in 1919 by Norton Hinckley and Dave L. Tandy. At that time, it was still called the Hinckley-Tandy Leather Company. Its first products were leather shoes parts. Charles Tandy, the son of Dave Tandy, turned it into a leather craft company. Later on, the company started selling tools for the manufacturing of leather products like wallets.
In 1950, the Hinckley was dropped in the company’s name making it Tandy Leather Company. In 1963, Tandy acquired RadioShack. It then turned into an electronics company. In the following years, Tandy expanded into the United States, Canada, England and Europe. Tandy also reached Australia where its first four stores opened in November 1973. And it was not long after it became one of the largest and most respected electronics retailers in that country.
In May 2000, Tandy changed its corporate name into RadioShack. And in 2001, it was acquired by Woolworths Limited.
At present, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Tandy is Claire H. Babrowski. She became Chairman and CEO after Dave Edmondson resigned in 2005.
Tandy is known for selling electronics. Included in its list of products are mobile phones, cameras and camcorders, batteries and home entertainment accessories. Furtheremore, Tandy is also known for being one of the three companies, the others being Commodore International and Apple, which started the revolution of personal computers.
Tandy’s first computer product is the TRS-80. The product was introduced to market in 1977. It was included in Tandy’s desktop microcomputer model line. It is small in size and has an included monitor. It also had features like a full-stroke QWERT keyboard and a well-written Floating Point BASIC programming language.
In 1980, Tandy released the TRS-80 Color Computer. This was different with the previous one in that it used a Motorola 6089 processor and not TRS-80's Z80.
In 1988, Tandy acquired GRiD Systems, a laptop manufacturer. In the 1990s, however, Tandy sold its computer manufacturing business to AST Computers, thus ending all the Tandy computer lines. Since then, the company had been selling computers made by other manufacturers like Compaq.
