Description: TEAC America Inc. is the largest subsidiary of Japan-based electronics maker TEAC Corporation. TEAC began in 1953 when the Tani brothers, both engineers, made the first TEAC range of products that comprised of open-reel audio tape recorders. As the company expanded, they were able to establish TEAC America Inc. in 1967.

Among its executives are President Koichiro Nakamura, Vice President and COO Derek Davis and SVP of Sales and Marketing Les Luzar.

TEAC America is a leading manufacturer of CD-RW, DVD Recorders, DVD-ROM, floppy disk, CD-ROM, hard disk and USB flash drives that can be used on desktop or notebook PCs. It also distributes high-grade audio video electronics, computer peripherals and professional recording equipment. The products are marketed under the TEAC, TASCAM and Esoteric brands. The company faces top competition from Panasonic Electronic Devices America, Sony USA, Reset Inc., MA Labs and Yamaha.

Goals of market expansion resulted in several distribution agreements. Liuski International Inc. signed for a distribution contract with TEAC America to carry its full range of TEAC IDE, floppy disk drives, removable storage products and SCSI CD-ROM drives. TEAC America also entered into a distribution agreement with Cumetrix Data Systems Corp. in 1998. Cumetrix now offers TEAC’s full line of data storage products.

In 1997, TEAC America released the industry’s first 4X12 CD-Recordable drive, the CD-R55S. It featured 4X write, 12X read and a low average access time of 165 ms. In 2002, the company released the TEAC’s 16X desktop DVD-ROM drive, the DV-516E. It combined smooth DVD video playback with impressive CD-ROM performance.

The company also tapped into the HDTV market with the release of an external HDTV tuner for notebook computers in early 2007. In late 2006, TEAC released its first portable storage device. The TEAC Multifunction Portable Storage Drive device is based around a 2.5-inch 40GB hard drive and has a USB 2.0 port and flash memory card slots that enable users to quickly transfer data between devices and onto a computer.

At the end of its fiscal year on March 2007, the company recorded revenues of approximately $203.7 million. The company has its headquarters in Montebello, California.
