Description: Tecmar was founded by Dr. Martin Alpert in 1974 to develop data acquisition products first used in medical technologies. Dr. Alpert started Tecmar with his wife, Caroline, as a business partner. Due to the limited market in the medical field, Dr. Alpert focused Tecmar to address the needs of computer systems for general purpose of data acquisition products.

Tecmar's LabMaster PC bus add-in card was integrated into 20 IBM PCs and introduced to the market in 1981 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Since then, the company became the first producer of add-on peripherals for IBM PCs. By 1985, Tecmar incorporated another company named Scientific Solutions. Tecmar concentrated in designing tape backup and storage solutions, while Scientific Solutions focused on Tecmar's original data acquisition products for the scientific, medical, and industrial field.

Tecmar was acquired by Rexon in 1986 focusing on the design and production of data storage products. Scientific Solutions continued to remain independent and successful through multimedia and scientific PC peripherals. Tecmar was later sold to Legacy Storage Systems in 1995 and to TTI in 1998. Being incorporated by TTI made Tecmar the leading brand in magnetic tape data storage products.

Tecmar's famous product line included the Labmaster series for S-100 boards, PC-MATE IEEE-448 add-in card for PC, BaseBoard Digital Input/Output card, and LabTender. Other PC products developed by Tecmar since 1981 includes PC Expansion Chassis, Time Master, Device Tender, Device Master, Speech Master, RAM Expansion, E2PROM, Multi-System Printer Sharing Facility, DADIO, and more.

IBM M-Motion Video Adapter for IBM PCs was due to the collaboration of Tecmar and Scientific Solutions in 1990. This allowed IBM PC users to view full-motion video on the computer screen with graphics overlay and full-video scaling capabilities.

Also, this joint venture of the two sister companies produced PS/2 TV in 1992, PS/1 TV in 1993 and PCTV in 1994 -- products with analog TV/Cable tuner external units incorporated into the design that allows the scaling and freeze-frame capture of videos on a computer screen.

The Audio Visual Connection product developed by both companies was awarded the winner in the 6th Annual PC Magazine Technical Excellence Awards in 1989. This technology is a sound card that uses analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters, amplifiers and other data acquisition products. This became the foundation of today's digital MP3 players.
