Ubinetics Drivers
Company: Ubinetics
Description: UbiNetics was started in 1999 in the United Kingdom. UbiNetics headquarters was located in Cambridge, UK. Other offices were placed in India, China, Hong Kong and Japan. A development center was also created at Swindon in the UK. Its name is derived from the term Ubiquitous Networks. Most of the founders were engineers, as well as University of Southampton post and PhD graduates. The 3i venture capital firm provided some of the company’s initial capital. Ali Pourtaheri was the original CEO of the company until he left in 2001. One of the earliest clients UbiNetics had been Emerging Technologies Limited. The agreement was made in May of 2003. Emerging Technologies is a subsidiary of Wong’s International Holding, an electronics company based in Hong Kong.
The company is known worldwide for its technological advances in 3G protocol stacks. One commendation it received is the Frost & Sullivan Excellence in Research Award in 2004. This award was given for the company’s patented technology used for multimode 3G handsets. James Maclaurin was appointed the UbiNetics Chief Financial Officer in October of 2004.
UbiNetics developed and supplied 2G, 2.5G, 3G and HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) protocol software for mobile and handheld computing developers. The company also distributed physical layer Internet Protocol stacks. UbiNetics’ technology is now integrated into CSR’s wireless protocol and DSP software. CSR also acquired the company’s IBC Knowledge Park offices in Bangalore, India. ADI also integrated UbiNetics software with its semiconductor devices.
UbiNetics divisions were acquired by two separate entities. The company’s WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple access) Silicon on chip group was sold to Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) in May 2005. This division contained most of UbiNetics’ revenue and intellectual and physical assets. The remaining research and Development division was sold to Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR Plc). The agreement was announced in July 2005. The latter part of Ubinetics had gross assets of about 3.6 million pounds.
UbiNetics is now defunct. Its assets and technologies have been absorbed by the two companies. Prior to its dissolution, it was one of the leading developers of wireless communication. The company supplied software to Original Design Manufacturers.
