Description: Vivitar Corporation is a known manufacturer of photographic and optical equipments. The same company distributes and markets its own product line. Vivitar has its headquarters and main business location in Oxnard, California.

In 2006, the original company was bought by Syntax-Brillian Corporation for the price of $26 million in stock. Until August of 2008, Vivitar Corporation functioned and operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sytax-Brillian Corporation. Vivitar was acquired by Sakar International in 2008, after Syntax-Brillian’s bankruptcy.

Vivitar Corporation has its roots way back in 1938 and was founded by Max Ponder and John Best. The company was originally an importer of photo products from Germany. After the WWII, it then started to import photographic equipments and cameras from Japan. Vivitar is responsible for introducing a number of camera brands in the US market including the Sankyo/Komura wide/teleadapter lenses, Kobina 8mm movie cameras, and Mamiya/Sekor 35mm cameras, among others. With the death of its founders, Max and John, the company went through the management of various owners.

By 1960, the company created the Vivitar brand and joined the competitive market of lens manufacturing industry. The company adheres to high quality products and affordability. Such philosophy built the company’s name and reputation, gaining more retailers in the sale of their products world wide.

Soon after, lens manufacturing companies also sought their services in creating quality lenses. The company created, designed and developed a number of camera lenses under a number of categories including manual focus prime lenses, manual focus zoom lenses, and auto-focus lenses.

At present, Vivitar is not only in the business of manufacturing lenses, they are also manufacturing camera and photography products which include 35 mm SLR cameras, zoom lenses, binoculars, flashes, digital cameras, point and shoot cameras, night vision photo products, underwater camera, tripods, and other camera accessories and photographic products.

Syntax-Brillian, Vivitar Corporation’s parent company since 2006, filed for bankruptcy. This led to the sale of Vivitar Corporation to Sakar International last August 2008. Sakar International, Vivitar’s current parent company is based in Edison, NewJersey. The sale of the company in Sakar’s favor included intellectual property rights and the use of Vivitar’s brand. Sakar International, a private company of consumer electronics, is set to offer digital cameras under the brand name Vivitar. The products under this new umbrella corporation vary from low-range to mid-price range digital cameras and photography products.
