Description: VLSI Technology, Inc. is a company specializing in the design, manufacture, and marketing of custom and semi-custom integrated chips (ICs). These are application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and application-specific standard products that increase the push of powerful embedded systems into affordable products.

Dan Floyd, Jack Balletto, Gunnar Wetlesen and Doug Fairbairn built the company in 1979. The first three were friends from Fairchild Semiconductor while Fairbairn came from Xerox PARC and Lambda magazine (later VLSI Design).

Alfred J. Stein has been the Chief Executive Officer of VLSI Technology since 1982. The company was bought by Philips Electronics for around $1 billion in 1999. With Phillip’s acquisition of VLSI, the former VSLI components were integrated and absorbed by Philips’ NXP Semiconductors.

VLSI Technology started out as an early vendor of standard cell-based technology to the market in the late 1980’s. They offered software design services due to the increasing numbers of transistors placed on the chips. This helped semiconductor producers develop and manufacture advanced ICs.

The company led the way to the development of ASICs-related design technology. This permitted semiconductor engineers to create and modify their own chips efficiently. Such innovation helped VLSI Technology boost its revenues in the span of four years.

VLSI Technology targets the semiconductor manufacturing industry. With the establishments of operated chip centers, the company certainly has become a shop for companies with a need for semiconductors. By using its design technology, the company also helps its customers design application-specific chips then proceeds to helping these customers employ the chips.

VLSI Technology has gained a reputation for its design and production of high-quality ASICs with the same rate as any other company in the industry --- but at a minimum cost. This allowed the company to land the biggest buyers in the market. In the 1990’s, VLSI Technology began targeting the market for semi-custom chips of application-specific standard products.

The company also focuses on developing peripheral devices utilizing its semiconductors from personal computers. In 1992, VLSI Technology started manufacturing chips that would make building powerful handheld computer devices possible. Eventually, IBM decided to make VLSI Technology as its chipset supplier for its Pentium-based desktop computers. By mid-1990’s, VLSI Technology became an established leader in the chipset business.
