Western Digital Corporation is based in Lake Forest, California, and is a well-known producer of hard drives. It was established as General Digital on April 23, 1970. It originally operated as a producer of test equipment for metal-oxide semiconductors (MOS).
Western Digital Corporation quickly transformed itself into a popular producer of specialty semiconductors with the help of capital from a number of investors. One of them is Emerson Electric Co. It changed its name to Western Digital in July 1971. Shortly thereafter, it launched its first product with this brand. It was the WD1402A Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (UART).
