Description: The Westinghouse Electric Company was founded in 1886 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Later it was renamed by George Westinghouse as Westinghouse Electric Corporation. George Westinghouse had also established the Westinghouse Air Brake Company.
Westinghouse was a pioneer in high-voltage transmission and long-distance power transmission. This company was the first recipient of the rights for the patent of the Nikola Tesla’s alternating-current transmission. Later on, lighting technology was unveiled by the company in Great Barrington, Massachusetts.
Other than George Westinghouse, other engineers who worked for the Westinghouse Electric Company were Nikola Tesla, Oliver B. Shallenberger, and William Stanley. The company had historically been a rival of General Electric which had been founded by Thomas Edison, the arch-rival of George Westinghouse.
In 1995 the company acquired CBS and renamed it CBS Corporation two years later. CBS Corporation created the subsidiary Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1998 for the purpose of managing the Westinghouse brand. A year later it was sold to Viacom, Inc. It was in 2005 that Viacom had renamed itself CBS Corporation.
The American company, Westinghouse Digital Electronics LLC, is involved in the manufacture of LCD monitors and other electronic products. It licensed its name from the CBS Corporation’s Westinghouse Electric Corporation. Westinghouse Digital is a recent addition to the market of LCD televisions. The said company is noted for mass-marketing the first monitors that are 1080p HDTV-ready.
Westinghouse Digital Electronics is among the top five manufacturers of LCD TVs in the United States.
