Description: Widcomm Inc. started in 1998 in San Diego. The pioneering team was a group of engineers proficient in the internet, wireless and cellular technologies. It developed products for indoor wireless communications. These products were later used for notebook and desktop computers, mobile phones and PDAs to access the Internet.

The company enters licensing agreements with manufacturers. Widcomm then provides these companies an enhanced protocol stack and a set of analysis, testing, and debugging tools. The software extends to all layers of the stack and is complete with features set for each layer. All components of the software are portable and can be tested.

Widcomm Inc. was one of the earliest to develop functional protocol stacks needed in Bluetooth devices. It also developed application interfaces for the individual layers and a bluetooth. The software includes basic ports so that the stack can be used with micro-controllers and real-time operating systems.

The application interfaces developed by Windcomm also comes with a different Bluetooth SIGs and their individual API suites. This allows developers to create any necessary applications. There are also ready-made applications included, such as synchronization programs between handheld PDAs and desktop computers and cordless phones.

Widcomm was also able to produce debugging tools and stack testing. These are marketed to semiconductor manufacturers. These were specifically created so that Bluetooth-compliant chipsets and compatible software can be created and embedded into PDAs, laptops, desktops and mobile phones.

Widcomm developed designs for four products. These were released in the year 2000 and onwards. The first product is BlueConnect. This is a small module that can be plugged into the back of a Handspring Visor PDA to provide Bluetooth accessibility.

The BlueCard device is a PCMCIA card that gives the laptop Bluetooth connectivity. It has hardware drivers compatible with the platforms Windows 95, 98, NT and 2000. BlueShare, on the other hand, is another device that enables Bluetooth in computers. It may be plugged into a USB.

Finally, BlueGate is a Bluetooth pass for a PSTN or Ethernet network. It works as a network access point to manage the communications between a number of Bluetooth-enabled devices in a specific area. It is compatible with the Windows platform and has an antenna and a V.90 modem for 10/100 Base-T or PSTN interface for Ethernet networks. The profiles of the device include LAN access, dial-up networking, serial port and others.

Broadcom Corporation purchased Widcomm in 2004. The acquisition gave Broadcom access to Widcomm’s software.
