Description: The WiebeTech Company was started in July 2000. It was founded in Wichita, Kansas by James Wiebe. The company was started to develop portable storage solutions. The products were either designed for consumers or for use by government institutions. The company was acquired in January 14, 2008 by CRU-Data Port.

CRU-DataPort is one of the first companies to focus on data security and data mobility devices. Its notable products enhance the portability of hard drives. It is patronized by business, education and government industries.

WiebeTech developed innovative devices for portable storage. It was the first company to develop portable devices that can store more than 256 Mb at a time. The first product of note was the FireWire KeyChain, which had a 1 Gb storage capability. This device was introduced in 2002 at the Macworld Expo.

The company was also the first to create a dock for accessing external hard drives. The group of products was called FireWire DriveDock. It allowed access to hard drives without needing to place them in a specific enclosure. The dock allowed it access to drives via FireWire without the need of an AC adapter.

WiebeTech’s foray into special devices for forensics started when computer forensic analysts challenged James Wiebe. Under their prodding, Wiebe released a modified version of the DriveDock products. These devices were write-blocked. It restricted access to data so that users cannot change them. The new product is often used in criminal investigations. WiebeTech further expanded its line to include more forensic devices.

Another WiebeTech product used in investigations is the WiebeTech HotPlug. This device is a power management system. It is often used to move desktop computers without shutting them down. The power supply simply needs to be diverted from the wall socket or power strip and plugged into the HotPlug device. The computer can then be moved without closing.

Aside from forensic and investigation products, WiebeTech continues to distribute its portable and desktop storage products and systems. It also has audio/video devices, Macintosh devices, host cards, cables, power supplies and photography solutions.

WiebeTech currently functions as a subsidiary of CRU. As a subsidiary, it has been retained as a CRU-DataPort brand. Despite this, the development functions of WiebeTech remain independent of the parent company. It continues to develop and manufacture its own products; it still retains its aluminum casing trademark; however, its products are now distributed using the CRU-DataPort supply chain.
