Chester Carlson, a patent lawyer and part-time inventor was the first to develop electrophotography in 1958. It is the technology of making paper copies. The Haloid Company acquired the rights of Carlson’s invention and developed a copying machine. The acquisition of said rights led to the birth of Xerox Corporation in 1958. Xerox came from two Greek words that meant “dry” and “writing.”

Xerox 914 was the first copier machine released. It became so popular that revenue reached almost $60 million. The revenue increased to $500 million in 1965. Xerox 813, on the other hand, was the first desktop plain paper copier. It fulfilled Carlson’s vision of a copier that could fit in anyone’s office. Soon afterwards, Xerox developed color copiers.

Gary Starkweather later modified the Xerox copiers for the company. He came up with laser printing technology. This technology was subsequently integrated in the Xerox 9700 model. It became a multi-billion dollar business for Xerox.

Today, Xerox not only manufactures photo copiers but also a range of black and white and colored printers, multifunction printers, LCD monitors, large-volume digital printers, Phaser printers and also workflow software under the brand FreeFlow. Xerox’ presence at IPEX 2006 has been responsible for the growing impact of their product, Xerox FreeFlow, in the print industry and graphics market.

To add to its increasing product line, Xerox also manufactures printing and office supplies such as paper, in many forms. It also markets software like DocuShare Xerox, FlowPort and MarketPort. The company also offers consulting services, ECM Digital Repository Services and printing outsourcing.

Currently, Anne Mulcahy is the chairman and CEO of Xerox Corporation. She headed the turnaround plan that brought the company full year profitability. The company has continued to invest on research and development, and focuses on the increase of cash and the decrease of debt.

The Xerox Corporation’s headquarters is located in Norwalk Connecticut but it still holds offices with a large base of employees in Rochester, New York where it was founded.

The company discourages the use of “xerox" as a verb. It endangers the company trademark to be declared as a generic word in courts. To avert these adverse effects, Xerox reached out to publications that have used Xerox as a verb. However, many dictionaries such as the Oxford English Dictionary still continue to categorize and list the word “xerox” as a verb.
