Description: Xircom Inc. is a California-based manufacturing company founded in 1988. It was co-founded by Kirk Mathews and Dirk Gates. It was one of the first companies to develop network computing products for notebook computers.

Xircom bought the Card Organizer product line of Rex PC in September 1999. In the year 2000, Xircom acquired Entrega Technologies Inc., a small company that produced USB upgraded boards and converters. It was also in the same year when the company acquired the Omnipoint Technologies Inc.

Xircom led the development of networking products for laptops. They introduced LAN adapters, computer memory cards, modems and remote access server products. Its products allowed notebook and laptop users to share pieces of information over a network connection.

Xircom also introduced 56K modems in the MiniPCI form factor. It also developed the Pocket LAN Adapter. Such adapter can be attached and connected to the printer port. This also allows a notebook PC or laptop to link to a network.

Xircom is most famous for its RealPort PC cards. It is a made-easy connectivity solution at 32-bit. Other Xircom’s known products are computer memory cards, modems, LAN adapters and remote access server products.

While Xircom is dedicated in providing innovative and reliable communication products for its costumers, it continues to advance and revolutionize communication products that bridge the gap between desktop and notebook connectivity.

The company successfully achieved revenues of $500M and a market cap in excess of $2B. It now employs over 800 people with 14 regional and remote marketing offices worldwide. To further advance its mobile communication, Xircom has established partnership with giant industries such as Intel, Toshiba, IBM, Digital, Lucent, Ascend, Cisco, Compaq and NEC.

Intel acquired Xircom in January 2001. After consolidation, Intel absorbed Xircom products and the latter was discontinued on October 21, 2005. Xircom, however, still continues in building a flexible and broad foundation of standard-based connectivity solutions that extend information to mobile users around the globe via connections to Internet, Intranet, corporate networks and other online services.

Additionally, the company has manufacturing facilities in Penang and Malaysia. Xircom’s international offices were also scattered throughout Asia Pacific and Europe.
