Spyware is broadly defined as software that takes advantage of a user’s computer to benefit a third party. Think of the Internet as a single book, so impossibly large that the idea of reading it all is an absurdity. For every 10 pages you read, 10,000 are added. You’ll never make it to the end.

Although you can’t read the whole book, search engines allow you to quickly scan millions of Web pages for any conceivable topic, so it’s easy to find the right chapters.

With Zheng Technology, ParetoLogic built on the idea of a Web search engine, which scans the Internet for a certain word or phrase. But instead of searching for specific content, Zheng hunts for websites and software that may harm a user’s PC. Using a system of automated “bot” computers controlled by ParetoLogic researchers, Zheng Technology sniffs out dangerous websites, Web-based spyware, and Internet threats and uses this acquired data to update and improve ParetoLogic’s Spyware database and compile a list of dangerous websites.

Here’s how Paretologic XoftspySE Zheng Technology works…

1. ParetoLogic researchers configure the Zheng Spider, telling it what to look for, how to test each website, and what to do with the collected data. Then, based on an initial list of websites to test, the Spider bots begins “crawling” the Internet, searching for websites that perform dangerous or unwanted actions, such as auto-installing malicious software on the visitor’s PC.
2. Upon visiting a site, the Spider bot performs a number of diagnostic tests to determine whether the site is safe. If the Spider finds an obviously malicious website, the URL is transmitted back to ParetoLogic and added to our Blacklist of verifiably dangerous websites. If the site is safe, it is added to a corresponding Cleanlist, meaning the site is safe. If the Spider cannot determine whether the site is safe, the URL is added to a Greylist of ambiguous sites. Unreachable or non-functional websites are quickly screened out.
3. Websites added to the Greylist must be tested further. More automated tests are performed, and if the site remains ambiguous, it is manually checked by a ParetoLogic researcher.
4. As the process continues, the Zheng Spider filters through its list of suspect websites, carefully testing for security and adding sites to the Cleanlist, Greylist, Blacklist, or Deadlist (reserved for unreachable sites). For each visited site, Zheng’s Logging Sub-System tracks the site’s effect on the bot machine and records data into a Site Activity Log.
5. The four lists, which are constantly being updated and improved, are integrated into ParetoLogic software to maintain up-to-the-minute security against the latest Internet threats.
